Chapter 22

Following the reception Maxwell loaded the equipment into his truck. The day had been long and exhausting. He could tell Lina was tired, but she didn’t complain. “So working woman, are you hungry?” he asked.

“I am pretty hungry. I know you must be too.” Lina turned to Maxwell and smiled. “Tell you what, since you have been such a wonderful assistant, how about I treat you to dinner.”

Maxwell smiled. “That’s kind of you to offer, but I can’t let you pay for dinner. I’ll take care of it. Where do you want to go?”

“I’m sort of in the mood for Mexican food. Can we go to Pepe’s? Unless of course you prefer something different.”

“Pepe’s sounds good. As a matter of fact, I believe there is one pretty close to here.” Maxwell pulled out from the parking lot and drove in the direction of the restaurant. His pocket buzzed indicating he had a telephone call.

“Are you going to get that? I know that buzzing has to be driving you crazy,” Lina inquired. “You won’t bother me by answering your phone.”

“I’m sure whoever it is will leave a message. Simon is taking care of the store. I spoke to my mother earlier and she was straight, so I’m really not worried about it.” Maxwell pulled into Pepe’s parking lot. The lot was full. “It looks pretty packed in there.”

“Yeah it does,” Lina agreed. “Let’s just get it to go. We can always eat our meal at my apartment. Besides it’ll give us some time to talk.”

Maxwell looked at her in disbelief. “Are you sure about that?”

“Yes I’m sure.” Lina pursed her lips. I’m not going to do anything to you. I’m not that kind of woman.”

Laughing, Maxwell agreed. “Okay, we can take it back to your place to eat, but don’t make this a habit young lady.”

“Forget you, let’s get our food.”

Maxwell and Lina rode to her apartment in silence. He couldn’t believe Lina invited him to eat with her in such a private setting. He felt good seeing the direction their relationship was heading in. Although he was interested in becoming involved with her, he realized building trust was most important.

Arriving at her apartment, Lina muttered, “Home sweet home.” She grabbed the food, and headed inside, as Maxwell gathered the equipment.

Lina set the table while Maxwell brought her equipment inside. It had been a long time since a man had been in her apartment. Normally she wouldn’t invite a guy in but this was different. Maxwell had helped her out a lot. Plus, after the noise of the wedding reception, she wanted to sit in a quiet atmosphere to enjoy her meal.

Maxwell placed his jacket on the back of his chair. “Where can I go to wash my hands?” he asked.

“Oh, the bathroom is right through there.” Lina pointed to a short hall on the other side of the apartment. “Just go straight back; the light should be on.”

Lina grabbed two glasses from the cabinet and filled them with ice. “What would you like to drink?” she yelled to Maxwell.
